The film continues the epic saga of ancient Rome, taking place years after the death of Maximus, the hero of the first Gladiator film. The story follows a grown-up Lucius (Paul Mescal), the nephew of the late emperor Commodus and son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), who once admired Maximus. When his home is conquered by tyrannical emperors, Lucius is forced into the Colosseum. Filled with rage and seeking to restore the glory of Rome, Lucius must look to his past for strength and honor. Denzel Washington plays Macrinus, a former slave who has become a powerful figure and trains gladiators. Pedro Pascal portrays General Acacius, who leads the forces that invade Lucius' home.
